Dimension: 1000 x 120 x 150 cm
Medium: Public installation, bricks on the ruins
I went deep into a shantytown on the fringe of a China's city, where the residents will be faced with house demolition and relocation in 2 months. I collected used bricks from the ruins that have been demolished, then ask each family in the shantytown that will be moved to write a wish on a brick, I engraved with the wishes of each inhabitant, as if I was restructuring their spiritual relationship, reconnecting these broken and closed scenes with interpersonal relationships.

For the bricks, they leave the wall and lose their destination. At present, the old houses in shantytowns are made of bricks with the structure of empty bucket walls. Bricks, as a tiny unit, seem to be like every inhabitant here, forming the entire village. After the urban remodeling, all familiar streets and neighborhoods will cease to exist, as if the walls were broken into bricks.
I communicated deeper with shantytown’s residents to explore their spiritual world, and longed to have a relationship with the residents here. Interacting with the villagers and creating work together had given my work an eventuality, which was one of the ways I personally enjoy.
I reassembled the waste bricks engraved with the wishes of each inhabitant, as if I was restructuring their spiritual relationship, reconnecting these broken and closed scenes with interpersonal relationships. Everyone in shantytown community spoke out, voices are kept in the new city, and every audience can hear them. This is not just a personal voice, but rather, a kind of force.
Each brick is an individual; wall, a group. Individuals form a group, and the group is dispersed into individuals. The process of cyclical movements impacts the memory of each generation that grows here. Each brick reconstructs scattered memory fragments, combining to build a wall that can never be pushed down.

Some wishes engraved on the brick such as“Hoping to get rich overnight” “Happy everyday”, “Wishing Changde City would become beautiful”“I wish my families health” etc.
